Book Review: The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride is a book! No, they didn’t make it into a book because the movie was popular. It became a movie because the book was so great!

IMG_0206Published in 1973, The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern’s Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure; The ‘good parts’ version, Abridged by William Goldman, is actually just a narrative within a narrative entirely written by William Goldman. He also wrote the screenplay for the 1987 movie.

This book had me laughing out loud and frequently pausing to read hilarious excerpts to my husband. I also kept taking pictures of lines to share on Twitter and Snapchat.

My Goodreads review is pretty basic: “Hilarious and fun. I can’t believe how many times I heard people say the movie was better. The book is better. The characters have more depth. A lot of little things from the movie make sense now. It had me laughing out loud constantly. Excellent read. I highly recommend.”

Not much more to say. The Princess Bride is a five star read in my book and is easily one of my new favorites. Check it out, you might just like it better than the movie.

    1. I only discovered it was a book last month when I saw it on your Goodreads profile! I had to look it up to find out that the book came first 😅 Then I HAD to read it! So thanks for unknowingly recommending it!

  1. That book is purely wonderful. I love the introduction! There is a anniversary edition with the first chapter of Buttercup’s Baby, which made me first very happy and then very sad because Goldman likes you to think that everyone dies at the end. I forgive him, for making me laugh so hard, and for making believe in S. Morgenstern.

    1. Just make sure to watch the movie again AFTER you read the book 😀
The book fills in a lot of background for why things are the way they are in the movie. Like the four white horses at the end, there is more to them than just being pretty! I think it’ll really enrich your understanding of the film!
