I was asked what genre of fiction I write recently. The easy answer: mostly fantasy. The actual answer: much more complicated.
I wasn’t even aware of the fact that I would be expected to write in only one genre of fiction as an author. I have story ideas for dystopian fiction, post-apocalyptic fiction, and a weird conspiracy thriller/romantic suspense type of story. Everything else that I want to write falls pretty easily into the fantasy genre. I stretched my wings with the second novel that I wrote, and end up with a romance novel.
I like all of my weird story ideas though, even if they aren’t fantasy. I don’t like the idea of being stuck in one genre once I start publishing and trying to get my name out there. I want to be able to write whatever I want. Of course, since most of the things that I want to write falls into the realm of science fiction and fantasy, maybe I’m not so bad off.
Still, it’s an odd thing to have to think about.
